What are Comic Strip Conversations

Comic strip conversations were created by Carol Gray.
They are simple pictures that show what抯 happening in a conversation. They show what people say, what they抮e thinking, and how they抮e feeling.
How Can They Help You?
- Understand how others feel: They help you figure out how someone else might feel and what they might be thinking in a certain situation.
- Solve problems: You can use them to think about problems and how to solve them in similar situations later on.
- Learn about emotions: They help you understand different feelings and emotions.
Before You Start
You can do comic strip conversations anywhere you have paper and a pen! It抯 best to find a quiet place where you won抰 be distracted, but we know that isn抰 always easy.
Some people like to keep a special notebook or folder for their comic strip conversations so they can look back at them later. But you can also use just a piece of paper that you can throw away, or a whiteboard or tablet.
When you first start using comic strips, try to use them for positive or neutral situations, not for something really upsetting or difficult.
How to Use Comic Strip Conversations
Let you pick what you want to write on, and if you want, you can do the drawing and writing yourself. (At first, you might need help with the drawings and writing until you get the hang of it.)
Remember, comic strip conversations are there to help you understand a situation better and come up with solutions on your own. They抮e not meant to tell you how to act or behave.
Reflecting on Real Life Events

Talking bubbles:
Write what was said in the conversation.
Thought bubbles:
Show what people might have been thinking during the interaction. If you need help remembering the event or conversation, you can ask yourself some questions like:
- Where were you?
- Who else was there?
- What were they doing?
- What happened?
- What did you say?
- What were you thinking when you said that? What do you think the other person was thinking?
- How did you feel?
- How do you think the other person felt?
If you have trouble figuring out what the other person might have been thinking, that抯 okay! You can try coming up with different ideas or asking an adult to help you. For example:
You: 揝he said she doesn抰 want to play with me. She doesn抰 like me.
Adult: 揗aybe she just wanted to read her book and wasn抰 in the mood to play right now.

Top Tips
- Don抰 worry about your drawings! Stick figures are perfect. It抯 not about being a great artist.
- Wait until you抮e calm: If you抮e feeling upset, it抯 best to wait until you抮e calm before reflecting on a situation. It抯 hard to think clearly when you抮e upset.
- Think about what you could do next time: If things didn抰 go well, think about what you might say or do differently next time. But remember, comic strips are not for judging what you did wrong. They抮e just for learning and understanding!
- You can use comic strips to plan ahead: If something is going to happen in the future, you can use a comic strip to think about what could happen, but remember梱ou can抰 be sure about how others will act or what they抣l say.
