Visuals for what's happening tomorrow or next week Video Transcript
Some autistic children find it difficult to understand what抯 going to happen the next day or the next week. And we know lots of children find it difficult when they抳e been going to school or nursery from Monday to Friday, and then suddenly the next week it抯 half-term or it抯 the school holidays and the whole routine has changed. So, you can use a visual to help them understand what抯 going to happen the next day or the following week.
So, this visual I have just made from cardboard, and it has the days of the week, so we抳e got Monday through to Sunday, all in different colours. And then we抳e got one visual for school, which is just on a piece of cardboard, cut out, with some Bluetak on the back. And then, we抳e got one for home. And, say it抯 a normal day of the week, what you would do, how you would use this visual, is you would show them, 揳h, so it抯 Monday today, it抯 school and then when Monday is finished 揙kay, Monday抯 finished, bye bye Monday. Tomorrow it抯 Tuesday. And you could show them, maybe before they go to bed, or when they get up in the morning on Tuesday, what they are going to be doing that day and that they抮e going to school.
So as the days of the week move on, you take the pictures off. And then, on Sunday, you could show them, say for example, the following week it抯 going to be a school holiday and they抮e going to be at home, instead of putting the school pictures up, you could add home pictures instead.
Now some autistic children might find it difficult to take in lots of pictures all at once, and to know the days of the week, so you might want to just start off with having one picture out to show them what they are going to do that day, and just show them when they get up in the morning, what they are going to do the next day.
