Visuals for changes in daily routines Video Transcript
If there抯 going to be a change in what usually happens in a child抯 day, you could use visuals to help explain to the child and prepare them for what the change is going to be.
So, you could use a visual timetable to help explain this. So, I have made this timetable for a child that can understand simple black and white drawings, but you could use photographs instead.
So, this child normally goes to nursery, then the park, and then home. But on this particular day, instead of going to the park, they are going to do something else.
So, on the visual timetable, to prepare them for the change, I could add a surprise symbol.
So, maybe in the morning, or for some children maybe the night before works better, you could show them the visual timetable with the surprise symbol on it, and say, 揳hh, today, we抮e going to go to nursery, and then there抯 a surprise, and then we抮e going home. And when I talk about the surprise, I use an excited facial expression and tone of voice, so that my child understands that it抯 not going to be a scary thing that抯 going to happen.
So, I might take the surprise picture off, and then draw a picture of what is going to happen next. Or I might show them a picture on my phone of where they are going to go.
So, in order to be able to use something like this in order to explain when there抯 going to be a change in the routine, you need to start using visual timetables with your child so that they understand what happens usually and they understand how a visual timetable works.
So, visual timetables are really good to introduce to your children and us as adults we use our own kind of visual timetable. We use diaries or calendars which help us to prepare for changes in our routine or for us to understand what抯 going to happen next in our day.
So visual timetables are a really good thing to use with your child.
