Using Visual Timetables Video Transcript

If you want to move on from using Now and Next boards and you want to communicate even more activities that the child is going to be doing that day, you could use something called a visual timetable or a picture timetable.

So, this visual timetable is made for a child that understands photographs, but not yet drawings. So, if your child understands drawings, you could use those on this timetable. So, I抳e got a Velcro strip here, but you could just have card with Bluetak on it.

And how I would use this is, first of all, I would show the child what is going to happen in their day. So, rather than have all the activities of their day on here, I might just have the ones in the morning. And I would just show them the key activities that are going to happen, because your whole entire day isn抰 structured, but there are probably some key things that structure the day.

So, on this timetable we抳e got nursery, then it抯 going on the bus, then it抯 Morrisons, then going back home.

And to help a child understand this timetable I would try to get them to actively engage with it. So, I would show them it抯 nursery, and then, when it抯 time to leave the nursery, I would get them to take off the picture and then put it on the back. And then when it抯 time to get on the bus I would show them. And then, once you抮e off the bus, I抎 say, 揳h, bus is finished, it抯 finished and I would encourage my child to take off the bus picture, and put it on the back, and then so on, as they go through the timetable, and in this way they will begin to understand that you start off with the activities at the top, and then as the day goes on we will move down the timetable. And this kind of visual really helps children understand the concept of time and the order in which activities are going to happen.
