Now and Next Visuals Video Transcript
If your child is able to understand photographs or simple drawings, and what you want to explain to them is what they are going to do now and then what they are going to do next, so the next two activities of their day, you could use something like a now and next board.
I抳e made this now and next board from an old pizza packet and then I have put some post-it notes with some simple drawings on, with the words written down below. And then we抳e got now and next written at the top.
And, now and next boards, you can have drawings on them, or you can put photographs on them instead, if that抯 easier for your child to understand. And they抮e very useful to use with children, particularly if they have difficulty moving from one place or activity to another place or activity.
So, this now and next board was made for a child that does understand simple drawings. And their difficulty is that when it抯 time to leave the park, they really don抰 want to go. So, I抳e had a think about what activity they really like to do, that if it comes next, they抮e more likely to want to leave the park to do the next really motivating activity. And I know this child really likes bubbles.
So how I would use this board is, before going to the park I would show them and tell them 揘ow park, next bubbles. And then I would do that again on the way to the park and when we抮e in the park. And then, when I know it抯 time to leave, I might use another visual. I might say, 揑n 5 seconds, the park is finished and I use the 揊inished Makaton sign. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, park is finished bye bye park. Next, it抯 bubbles!
